Deborah Haynes is a Professor of Art and Art History at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and former Chair of the department from 1998-2002. In 2003 she began planning and developing a new residential academic program in the visual and performing arts, which is now in its seventh year with over 300 students.

She also served as Director of Women’s Studies at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. With an M.F.A. in studio arts from the University of Oregon and a Ph.D. in The Study of Religion at Harvard University, she is both a writer and artist. Haynes is the author of four books: Bakhtin and the Visual Arts (Cambridge, 1995), The Vocation of the Artist (Cambridge, 1997), Art Lessons: Meditations on the Creative Life (Westview, 2003), and Book of This Place: The Land, Art, and Spirituality (Pickwick, 2009). She has also published numerous articles in a variety of scholarly and popular publications on philosophy of art and pedagogy. Her creative work includes drawing and carving words in marble.
