HISTORY
For twenty years, arts has explored the relationships between theology and the visual, musical, dramatic, literary, and liturgical arts. It has grown from a 12 page black and white magazine to a 56 page publication in full color with major artists featured and established writers contributing to its success.

SIGNIFICANCE
Each issue features articles written by well-known theologians and respected artists. By offering a forum for the religion and arts dialogue, arts has become a source, sustainer, and an advocate for work in theology and the arts including work in degree programs, centers for the study of religion and the arts, the church, and arts organizations. As the journal for SARTS, the recently created academic society, arts has become a place for the publication of the Society's scholarly work and institutional proceedings.

EXPANSION
arts is now publishing two additional issues online which will provide added reviews of books, journals, conferences, exhibitions, and poetry along with feature articles. This expansion will allow greater interaction among subscribers regarding their own work in religion and the arts.

Our publication is a valuable resource that has been acclaimed by artists and scholars for twenty years. We invite you to begin or renew your subscription today.

Each issue of arts features articles and reviews in the following areas:

IN THE STUDY where we present in an interdisciplinary fashion articles that draw on art history, theology, aesthetics, biblical studies, liturgical studies, and art criticsm treating topics as varied as medieval iconography and contemporary theological approaches to art criticism and aesthetics.

IN THE STUDY sample article: Theological Aesthetics and the Art of John August Swanson (ARTS 21:2)
Due to the length of this article, it has been split into five sections, one for each author:

IN THE SANCTUARY where we reflect on the use of the arts in worship settings—from liturgical design to the role of art in a worship service.

IN THE STUDIO where we explore the transformational experience of doing art with articles written by artists and about artists.

IN THE CLASSROOM where we discuss various approaches for teaching theology and the arts courses in colleges, seminaries, churches, and community organizations.

IN REFLECTION where we offer essays, poetry and personal reflections that invite us to turn to a consideration of our own personal worlds of spiritual contemplation.
