Journal Updates and News

Welcome to ARTS: The Arts in Religious and Theological Studies.
ARTS: The Arts in Religious and Theological Studies is the shared journal of the Society for the Arts in Religious and Theological Studies (SARTS) and ARC: Arts | Religion | Culture. Published for more than 25 years, this academic journal explores the interrelationships among theology, creative practice, spirituality, and the arts.
What is ARTS?
ARTS has been recognized as the single publication devoted specifically to the role of the arts in theological education and religious studies while also serving clergy, artists, and laity interested in the religion and arts dialogue. This journal seeks to expand our understanding of how the arts deepen and sustain our lives of faith, and how our spirituality relies on the arts for profound expression. Its exploration is ecumenical and interfaith.
Who publishes and funds ARTS journal?
ARTS is the joint journal of the Society for the Arts in Religious and Theological Studies (SARTS) and ARC: Arts | Religion | Culture. It is published by the Religion and the Arts Program at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities and appreciates the additional financial support of partner institutions.
In what areas do you publish?
ARTS is ecumenical and interreligious. We focus on the visual arts, but are open to article submissions in all artistic media. In every issue, we publish about theology and the arts:
How long has ARTS been published?
For twenty-nine years, ARTS has explored the interrelationships among theology and the visual, musical, dramatic, literary, and liturgical arts. It has grown from a 12-page, black and white newsletter to a 100-page academic journal in full color. The journal’s success is attributable in no small part to high-quality articles written by established scholars, who treat the theological and/or religious dimension of work by major artists, even as accomplished artists reflect on the ways in which they understand the arts to express the sacred.
Who subscribes to ARTS?
ARTS has been recognized as the single publication devoted specifically to the role of the arts in theological education and religious studies while also serving clergy, artists, and laity interested in the religion and arts dialogue. Our readership is therefore comprised primarily of academics, clergy, and artists.
What is the significance of ARTS?
Each issue features articles written by well-known theologians and respected artists. By offering a forum for the religion and arts dialogue, ARTS has become a resource and an advocate for work in theology and the arts. ARTS has played a role in prompting the development of degree programs, the opening of centers for the study of religion and the arts, the launching of exhibit spaces and galleries in churches, and the emergence of other arts organizations.
How often is ARTS published?
ARTS is now publishing two issues in print and online annually. The fall issue is released each November and the winter issue is released each May. Our publication is a valuable resource that has been acclaimed by artists and scholars for more than a quarter of a century. We invite you to begin or renew your subscription today.
