Hapax Legomena
A Series by Cory Dugan
Cory Dugan named his recent solo exhibition, “Hapax Legomena.” This term, which comes from the ancient Greek, means a word that occurs only once in a text. Dugan finds the hapax legomena for his pieces in a range of sources, including the Holy Sonnets of John Donne, the complete dramatic works of William Shakespeare, the Hebrew Bible, and the Christian New Testament. For ARTS, we are featuring Dugan’s Gospel series. In this series, he has combined the Greek hapax legomena from the New Testament that appear in each Gospel with diagrams of buildings and images of clouds, among other visual aspects, to create a dream-like world. The exhibition ran at the Beverly and Sam Ross Gallery at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tennessee, from August 12-October 12, 2016. Cory Dugan, who holds a B.F.A. from the University of Memphis, has shown this work since the 1980s, most recently at Material Gallery and Crosstown Arts, both in Memphis.
